COLUMBUS – For the second time in five days Moeller head coach Carl Kremer was patrolling the sidelines at the Value City Arena. Only this time was a more enjoyable, and far less stressful, situation.

Kremer was the co-head coach of the West team in the 2010 McDonald’s All-American game, and unlike during the regular season, spent most of the sitting on the padded chairs courtside. His Moeller team lost 57-34 in the OHSAA Division I state finals Saturday.
“We had our first practice (at the arena) yesterday, and I told some of the coaches that I felt like (General) Custer returning to Little Bighorn,” said Kremer. “It was a great diversion. I had to immediately focus on (the McDonald’s game). This was a once in a lifetime experience.”
His return turned out a little better for Moeller’s general as the West pulled out the 107-104 victory thanks to a three-pointer by Brandon Knight. The 6-3 guard from Coral Springs, FL, who is undecided on his college choice, nailed a three-pointer with three seconds left to hold off a furious East comeback.
“For me, it’s a great honor,” said Kremer. “It’s a great honor for the school. It’s a lasting impression. I had a feeling that the kids would not be receptive to coaching, but the 12 kids that I got to coach are terrific. They were great young men.”
Ohio State bound Jared Sullinger was named the East MVP after scoring a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds. Possibly even more spectacular for the Northland product was he was a game-time decision after spending time in the hospital with a bout of possible food poisoning.
Two players that could possibly wind up in Lexington turned in nice performances. C.J. Leslie scored seven points with a game-high nine boards, while Josh Selby tallied 13 points and three assists.
Kremer also said you earned a greater appreciation of the entire behind the scenes work it took to pull off such a huge event.
He wasn’t the only area coach to have the honor of coaching in one of the nation’s premier high school events. Indian Hill head coach Scott Rogers was on the sideline of the East team in the girls’ game that preceded the boys’ game. The East team fell to the West, 84-75, in a fairly physical game.
It was the third straight victory for the West, which leads the all-time series, 7-2. Tennessee commit Meighan Simmons scored a game-high 21 points to lead the West.
